Dr. Barbara C. Fisher, Ph.D., C.B.S.M., Psychologist/Neuropsychologist is the founder and Clinical Director of United Psychological Services. Dr. Fisher is an author of various published articles and three books. Her fourth book is due out in 2011 and is a revision of her first book; Reasons for Mis-Diagnosis: Approaching ADD from a Brain Behavior Neuropsychological Perspective for Assessment and Treatment. This edition will report all of the trends found in assessing this disorder using the same neuropsychological test measure in over 20 years of practice to diagnose ADD/ADHD. She is currently involved in a research project compiling data on over twenty years of testing for ADD/ADHD.
Trained as a neuropsychologist, Dr. Fisher has spent much of her time assessing and studying children to understand how the presence of various disorders such as ADD/ADHD, Autism, TBI and other brain challenges affects their ability to learn and function. Pediatrics and the aging population have been her focus of specialization in order to understand the impact of the brain upon behavior and thinking processes. On the cutting edge of assessing ADD/ADHD with neuropsychological testing and not relying upon self-report measures for diagnosis, she has more recently focused upon the Autism Spectrum. Evaluating children diagnosed with Autism, she found that many suffered from a variety of disorders from sleep apnea to undiagnosed brain injury and seizure. It became apparent to her that their difficulty learning had more to do with teaching methods and lack of accurate diagnosis than the child’s ability to learn.
Dr. Fisher is board certified in behavioral sleep medicine. She speaks on sleep internationally; specifically the connection between ADHD and sleep. She did her sleep fellowship at the JFK Neuroscience Center in Edison, New Jersey. She has participated in several research projects identifying the relationship of Restless Legs Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movements in sleep to the ADHD population of children and adults. Dr. Fisher has developed a program for insomnia that the staff at United Psychological Services utilizes which is based upon principles of cognitive behavioral therapy.
Dr. Fisher developed a school program; Fisher Academy, with the goal of encouraging learning based upon frontal lobe principles to help children diagnosed with autism and frontal lobe disorders. She also operated a camp for several years that provided social skills and the development of “emotional intelligence” to children who struggled to connect socially in order to develop positive peer interactions.
United Psychological Services offers cutting edge diagnostic assessment as well as the means to refer children to like-minded professionals. Following assessment, a treatment program is created using the specific therapies and treatments that will provide the child with the most benefit. United Psychological Services offers a range of therapeutic services offering individual and family therapy, cognitive training, behavioral therapy for sleep disorders as well as special interest groups to address bullying, social skills, weight, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and trauma. While United Psychological Service’s primary goal is taking care of children, the clinic offers services to address the entire lifespan.
