Dr. Barbara C. Fisher, Ph.D., is the founder and Administrative Director of United Psychological Services. Dr. Fisher is an author of various published articles and three books. You can order any of Dr. Fisher’s books by clicking on the following link; ADD Books (including Attention Deficit Disorder, Practical Coping Methods, Second Edition, November 2006).

Dr. Fisher speaks extensively throughout the country on a variety of topics including:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Brain injury
  • Sleep disorders
  • Dementia
  • The Autism Spectrum

She is currently involved in a research project compiling data on over twenty years of testing for ADD/ADHD.

Trained as a neuropsychologist, Dr. Fisher spent much of her time assessing and studying children to understand how the presence of various disorders such as ADD/ADHD, Autism, TBI and other brain challenges affects their ability to learn and function. Pediatrics has been her specialization to understand the impact of their brain upon behavior and thinking processes. On the cutting edge of assessing ADD/ADHD with neuropsychological testing and not relying upon self-report measures for diagnosis, she has more recently focused upon the Autism Spectrum. Evaluating children diagnosed with Autism, she found that many suffered from a variety of disorders from sleep apnea to undiagnosed brain injury and seizure. It became apparent to her that their difficulty learning had more to do with teaching methods and lack of accurate diagnosis than the child’s ability to learn.

Fisher Academy
Helping school systems focus on this population; a group of parents convinced her to open a small school specifically designed to address the learning needs of Autistic children and children suffering from frontal lobe disorders.

For five years, Fisher Academy provided targeted instruction in language and math to a small group of children in conjunction with other school programs. Children completing a year at Fisher Academy were able to return to their school given their newfound abilities and skills.

Fisher Academy camp
When it became apparent that she could also reach the child who had minimal school issues, with her school staff, she created the Fisher Academy camp. The camp focuses upon “filling in the gaps” of math, language and reading that may have been missed during building block grades. In the afternoon, the children make crafts, play games and learn to socialize. Dr. Fisher and her staff call it “social engineering” as children boost their “emotional intelligence” by learning to relate to other children in a meaningful and positive way, becoming aware of the integration of their own feelings as well as the feelings of their peers. The camp has been extremely successful and is currently in its 3rd year.

United Psychological Services offers cutting edge diagnostic assessment as well as the means to refer children to like-minded professionals. Following assessment, a treatment program is created using the specific therapies and treatments that will provide the child with the most benefit. United Psychological Services offers a range of therapeutic services offering individual and family therapy, cognitive training, behavioral therapy for sleep disorders as well as special interest groups to address bullying, social skills, weight, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and trauma. While United Psychological Service’s primary goal is taking care of children, the clinic offers services to address the entire lifespan. Psychologists are trained to address problems of adolescents, young adults, middle aged adults and the aged population. Cutting edge diagnosis and therapy for the various forms of dementia is another specialty.

United Psychological Services is dedicated to remaining “on the cutting edge” of diagnosis and therapy to offer the best possible treatment. Dr. Fisher and her staff firmly believe that everyone can be helped.
